How to Setup K1000 Replication on an ESX Server

Hey folks,

This is a guide I wrote for internal setup of a K1000 Replication. While the Server creation wont apply to everyone because of our particular structure, it has some information at the end about setting up the share. So I left it in.

When setting up remote site replication for the K2000 system you also need the files of the K1000 available to be used when the system calls for it. Since the RSA server only takes care of the K2000 replication we need to replicate the contents of the K1000. I like to do this by setting up a Win2k8 R2 server to contain the files and handle the replication. Below are the steps you’ll go through to prepare the Server and get replication started. If anyone has any questions I'll do my best to answer them! If you want to set up a K200 RSA as well be sure to check out my other blog post "How to Setup a K2000 RSA on an ESX Server"

Server Creation

  1. Connect to the ESX Server of the site you want to set up for Replication and choose to create a new VM.
  2. Leave Typical Configuration selected and choose Next.
  3. Input the name following this naming scheme: <SITE>VMK1REP (i.e. KOVMK1REP, INVMK1REP)
  4. Select the datastore you’ll use and click Next.
    1. You’ll want to double check with the system admin or IT manager to make sure you’re good to carve out 300GB+ for this Replication Server.
  5. In the Guest Operating System Page Choose Windows -> Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (64bit) and click Next.
  6. Leave network as the default and click Next.
  7. Change the Virtual Disk Size to 300GB and choose Thin Provision then click Next.
  8. Finish creating the new VM and edit the settings.
  9. Change the Network Adapter’s Network Label to Server, if available. (That is specific to our infrastructure) Set CD/DVD drive to Datastore ISO File. Choose browse for the ISO file. You may have to look into the datastores to find the Windows 2008 R2 server ISO. Choose it, and then check “Connect at power on” at the top.
  10. Power on the VM and open the console.
    1. This will likely be very slow until we can setup remote desktop.
  11.  Start the Server 2008 installation. Select Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (Full Installation) and click Next. Accept the license terms and click Next. Choose Custom (advanced) and select Disk 0. Then click Next, windows will then install.
  12. After the install Windows will ask you to change the password.
  13. At the initial Configuration tasks do the following:
    1. Licensing will automatically come down for the server, skip that field. (This is specific to our Infrastructure, you may need to put in a license)
    2. Set the time zone and double check the time with Google for that location
    3. Set the IP as static, if needed you can put in a ticket and assign it to the network engineer to get an IP address. Enter the IP, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway in. For DNS see below.
      1. Primary DNS: IP address of local DC (i.e. KOVMDC01)
      2. Secondary DNS: HQ DNS server
    4. Enter in the Server Name (As created in Step 3) as the Computer Name and join it to the Zeeco domain.
    5. Before Restarting I like to go ahead and set up Remote Desktop.
      1. Click the Remote Tab in System Properties and select the second option “Allow Connections from computers running any…”
      2. This will prompt you to edit the firewall settings. Click “Windows Firewall with Advanced security” to do this.
      3. At the bottom of the Overview Pane in the middle choose “Windows Firewall Properties.”
      4. Change the Firewall State to Off for Domain, Private and Public profiles. Click OK and hit Alt–F4 to close the Firewall window.
      5. Click OK on the Remote Desktop Firewall Exception prompt and choose “Select Users”
      6. Click Add (Alt-d) and add Domain Admins and Local Support. Click OK to close the window and restart the server.
    6. Log back in through the console and install VMware Tools
      1. Right click <SITE>VMK1REP in vSphere and choose Guest -> Install VMware Tools. This will pull up an autorun box where you’ll click to run the setup. Follow the prompts to finish. This will require a restart.
    7. Log in through Remote Desktop
    8. Click “Download and Install Updates” under (2) Update this Server.
    9. Click “Let me choose my settings” then Set Important updates to “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.” Check “Give me recommended updates…” and click OK.
    10. Click Install Now to get the first round of updates installed. Install all the updates.
  14. Once you’ve completed the initial tasks open up Windows Explorer on the C:\ drive create a folder called “<K1NAME>k1000Replication” and Share it with the following users: <KACE Service account> (Read/Write access)
      1. On your local computer click start -> and type in \\<ServerName>\ to make sure you can see the folder you just shared.
  15. Back on your machine, Log in to the K1000 Admin console and navigate to Settings -> K1000 Agent. Click Single Machine Provisioning.
      1. Input the IP Address for the Server. Use the domain administrator info for the domain, username, and password. Click Run Now when it’s ready. You can click “Refresh” at the bottom to see when it’s finished.

K1000 Replication

  1. Log in to the K1000 Admin console and navigate to Distribution -> Replication. Then Select Choose Action -> Add New Item. Follow the steps below to enter the proper fields.
    1. Replication Machine: Find the Replication machine you provisioned above.
    2. Uncheck “Failover to K1000”
    3. Destination Path: C:\<Replication Server>
    4. Destination Path User: <Domain>\<KACE service Account>
    5. Destination Path Password: <Service Account Password>
    6. Label: Select the label for the particular site you’re creating this server for (i.e. LOC – KO IP Subnet for Korea, LOC – IN IP Subnet for India)
      1. If you don’t have a label for this group save the Share as is and navigate to Home -> Label -> Label Management -> Choose Action -> Add New Label
      2. Names should follow this naming scheme LOC (for Location) – <SITE> IP Subnet (see 1.6 for examples)
      3. Input <Site name> IP Subnet (172.XX) for the notes
      4. Check Computer Inventory and click Save.
      5. Go to Label -> Smart Label. Click on one of the LOC – <SITE> IP Subnet’s and choose Duplicate.
      6. Assign it to the Static label you created and change the IP subnet in the SQL code. They should be on the last two lines. Click Save.
    7. Download Path: \\<replication server>\<ServerName>k1000Replication (The folder you created in the above step 14).
      1. i.e. \\kovmk1rep\bavmk1000Replication
    8. Download Path User (and Password): Same as 1.4 and 1.5
    9. Make sure Replication On (hi) is on for the entire field. Hi Bandwidth is 200000 and Lo Bandwidth is 100000. Replicate App and Dell Packages.
    10. Input: <Site> K1000 Replication in the notes and hit Save.
    11. Double check all your settings.
    12. Check Replication Enabled and click Save.
