Can you have one DHCP reservation for two MAC addresses?

The ERP software we use is licensed by terminal number which is set by IP address. In order to use the software, the IP address you have needs to have a terminal number assigned to it. You can not have mulitple IP addresses for a terminal number.

We have laptop users in the office that when they use wireless, they cannot use the software because the ERP software doesn't see a terminal assinged to the IP the wireless adapter is getting. In a perfect world, we'd love to be able to set the wireless MAC address and the NIC MAC address to get the same IP via DHCP reservation, so whether they are using wireless or the NIC card, they get the same IP address and therefore can use the ERP software. It would save us from having to purchase two ERP software licenses for these mobile users.

I don't think it's possible to have one IP address reserved for two MAC address - wireless and NIC. Can anyone verify if this can or cannot be done?

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks,

Luke

you would need 2 routers so if you have a wap running nat behind it you may get away with this.  If not set up by someone with a lot of routing knowledge could lead to all sorts of routing loops.  have also found where in some routers you can create static dhcp config file and assign both mac same addess

Are your wireless DHCP range and Wired DHCP range the same (are they sharing one scope)?

If so, you may find the easiest thing to do would be to use a script leveraging the netsh command to set the IP address. All the user would need to do is double-click a shortcut.

Sample syntax would be:

netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”Local Area Connection” source=static address=192.168.0.5 mask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.0.1

  • Great idea, you gave me another way this should work. Have one router for both wired and wireless.
You can set the hardwire as static on the machine and on the dhcp settings of the router set the wireliess mac static to that IP. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
  • I'll have to try out the script, sounds like the easiest way. - beckman3 11 years ago
