If the machine is bootable into Target mode then you can just use Disk Utility. Otherwise there are a lot of options for creating disk images. If this is a one time deal, then using Disk Utility or dd in Terminal can work. If you are making an image to deploy to multiple other machines then I would recommend DeployStudio. You don't have to run a server, it can be used from a bootable drive.

Hi Leeparker,

You need to pick up two things to create a bootable clone of your MacBook Pro hard drive.

  1. An external hard drive greater than Mac’s internal hard drive
  2. Stellar Drive Clone Software (http://www.itninja.com/link/backup-boot-camp-on-mac)
To prepare the external drive, just follow these below steps:

  1. Open the Disk Utility application on your Mac.
  2. Now, Click on the drive icon that corresponds to your clone drive in the sidebar.
  3. In the 3rd step, Click on the Erase tab.
  4. Make sure Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is selected from the Format menu.
  5. Click on the Erase... button to proceed further.
  6. Verify you want to erase the disk.
If you have done it successfully, you should see a new hard drive icon appear on your desktop. After that, use the above mentioned Mac backup software to complete the cloning process.
