IE8 Cache Folder

We are currently experiencing an intermittent problem after an upgrade from Ie 6 to 8 on XP machines only, where the temporary internet files location will be displayed in the Internet explorer options as

C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCAL~1\Temp\Temporary Internet Files

But when you click on view files the folder which opens is

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Any idea why this is happening?

What you are seeing is a result of legacy action that dates back to MS-DOS where supported file and folder names were only 8 characters long.  This is basically backwards compatibility.  After Microsoft added Long Filename Support (LFN) it began truncating names of long files or folders in such a way that older programs would still be able to recognize.

If you were to have two folders, one called "documents" and another called "documents and settings", their truncated names would be DOCUME~1 for "documents" and DOCUME~2 for "documents and settings"

Hope this answers your question.

  • WhitzEnd... Thanks for that but I have good idea about 8.3 format and backward compatibility. My question is why its showing one folder location but opening another location. This is creating problem for one of our app. After a restart the IE setting shows the LFN path and no more the short path and the application works fine. Please remember this restart is not the required IE8 updrade restart but one additional restart. - imavanura 11 years ago

Hey guys,

Finally the problem has been resolved. It was a side effect of the issue from the following KB.

http:/support.microsoft.com/kb/974277/en-us

The following registry fixed the issue.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_USE_IETLDLIST_FOR_DOMAIN_DETERMINATION]

"Winlogon.exe"=dword:00000000

could be something held in the current users hive, a restart flushes it out.  try searching HKCU and see what is there restart and see what changes.  You could even use a tool like http://www.itninja.com/link/regshot-is-an-open-source-lgpl-registry-compare-utility-1 to do this for you.

  • Just found this, it suggests something with the user temp variable. This is stored at HKCU\Environment

  • Sorry that URL does not have an answer but a question and by the way he is my teammate who is equally struggling with this. We have tried the environment variable thing but its of no good. It does not point to the required folder no matter how you chnage it. But when you click on view file it always open the right IE 8 Cache fiolder. It only gets points to the right folder after a restart of the system. Now due to the nature of our business we cannot ask every user to login and then give a resrat to every new system they go to. - imavanura 11 years ago
