Is there a way to disable "Repair adobe reader installation" menuitem for Acrobat Reader 9

I don't think it's recommendable for corporate deployment. What do you think ?

I tried with below Registry entry in Win XP. Its working fine.

Added DWORD entry "DisableMaintenance =1" under "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\<Version>\".

Hey Ikke!

Yes, there is a way to do it using general/system properties and set an option repair to "no"...

I am not sure... but what is the purpose to do it?
I think the correct answer for your question is: Depends...

Each environment is different... and the admin must know what is doing/making and what is the purpose of the environment changes...

I worked in customers, they prevented the repair option and other environment the users were admin local that had options to do everything they wanted.

This is from Professional - Not sure if it will work with yr version. Give it a Go

Create a file called Hidemenu.js and drop this into it:

//HideMenu.js

//Others you could add, however remove // before app.hideMenuItem
//Hides View > Menu Bar
app.hideMenuItem("ShowHideMenuBar");
//Hides View > Toolbars > Beyond Adobe Reader
app.hideMenuItem("ShowHideToolbarReaderDowntown");

//Hides “Document" on main toolbar
//app.hideMenuItem("Document");

//Hides “Tools" on main toolbar
//app.hideMenuItem("Tools");

//Hides Tools > Object Data
//app.hideMenuItem("DataToolsItem");

//Hides Tools > Customize Toolbars
app.hideMenuItem("CustomizeToolbars");

//Hides Help > Beyond Adobe Reader
app.hideMenuItem("GettingStarted");

//Hides Help > How to
app.hideMenuItem("HelpHowTo");

//Help > Online Support
app.hideMenuItem("OnlineSupport");
//Hides Help > Repair Adobe Reader Installation
app.hideMenuItem("DetectAndRepair");

//Hides Help > Purchase Adobe Acrobat
app.hideMenuItem("BuyAcro");

//Hides View > Read Out Loud (Great for Citrix)
//app.hideMenuItem("ReadLoud");
//Hides Edit > Preferences
//app.hideMenuItem("GeneralPrefs");

Just have your install store the Hidemenu.js in Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Javascripts and when users launch adobe it will hide the requested menus.

Hi Ditch_nz,

I try using the j script youve mentioned, and it works great in Windows XP.

***//Hides Help > Repair Adobe Reader Installation
app.hideMenuItem("DetectAndRepair");

But in Windows Vista, the "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" is still working.
Is there a other way?
thanks

Is there a other way?Does the Vista machine have a JRE installed on it? Is JS disabled?

Yes there is a JRE Installed in the Vista machine. I check it many times and I discovered that there's a three (3) seconds interval to disable the Repair Adobe Reader Installation. Like when you launch the shortcut then click the 'Help' Tab within less than 3 seconds the 'Repair Adobe ...' is still there. But when you click the Help Tab after 3 seconds, it will not show. Is there a better way to hide the 'Repair Adobe ...' without waiting for 3 seconds?

Thanks in advance...

Is there a better way to hide the 'Repair Adobe ...' without waiting for 3 seconds?Re-write the JRE engine? Java is slow (caveat: in its Windows implementations). Have you run any of the current installers which use Java (Oracle is a good example)? I could sketch the UI with a blunt crayon faster than the JRE takes to draw its screens...

so that means that it is a natural behavior in Vista?
And I havent run any of the current installers which use Java.

I mentioned other Java apps merely to point out that Java is slow. It has no relevance to the Adobe issue.

Ok. Thanks.

Again, Is there a better way to hide the 'Repair Adobe ...' without waiting for 3 seconds?

As I mentioned, without re-writing the Java engine, no.

Reading through the Acrobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf on page 64 it seems that this option can be removed using a registry key.  The only problem is I can't get it to work using Acrobat X following the Adobe instructions. The instructions aren't as clear as they should be and they don't seem to follow the standard laid out in the rest of the document, ie. "<Version>" / "Version", and using numbered steps with concise instructions.

Acrobat Standard and Reader users can run repair from the help menu on Vista and above. If a
reboot is required, the Citrix server hosting the application will be restarted. To prevent this
problem, administrators need to create a string registry entry named Disable_Repair under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\Version\Installer=”true”.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
