Is there a way to distinguish SFF and mini-tower chassis in KACE?

I have a need to determine if a computer (Optiplex 7010 for example) chassis is SFF or mini-tower by looking in KACE.  Right now chassis type just says desktop.  I can enter the service tag on Dell's website and look at the system build to find the information but it would be easier if a custom inventory rule could be used to decode the service tag and report the chassis type for me.  Has anyone else done this?

Look under Inventory Information/Hardware/Dell Service Info, it may say SFF instead of DT.  Below is one of my 7010 Desktops and a Latitude E5430.  Not sure but it may be a place to start.

System Type:  OPTI 7010,LANIKAI 7 DT A
System Type:  LATITUDE E5430,CTO,KORBEL 14

  • Thanks. That works for the 7010 but I have other models such as the 380 that does not report DT o SFF. It just says Azteca. I ended up creating a custom inventory item that runs the command wmic systemenclosure get chassistypes but it's not running on the XP computers (it is working on Windows 7 and servers). I can run the command manually and get the correct data return but it won't work in KACE for some reason. I even tried on a fresh boxinstalled from CD without any antivirus or management besides KACE but it still won't work. I'm stuck there now. - kcorrie 10 years ago
