Silent IS install ResultCode=0, but nothing is installed.

Hi,

I am working on this app called MicroStrategy 9 and it's becoming a pain in the ass. Finally, after quite some time I found out that I'm better off not repackaging this app to a MSI. So instead I went for the answer file method. It's pretty much a standard InstallShield wrapper (no MSI inside). However, after having recorded all the config files I have trouble with installing it.

As the Package KB and the vendors guide mentions:

setup.exe -L0007 --ResponseFile="<path>\response.ini" -f1"<path>\setup.iss" -f2"%temp%\microdt.log"

Be careful if using the response file method of deploying this application and the Installation and Configuration Guide pdf, as the command line specified in the guide is incorrect. The double quotes have been written incorrectly as “ and ” rather than " and this means the setup.exe completely ignores the response file.

The command line above seems to be working (and yes I have checked the quotes) as setup starts, but then finishes a bit too soon.

The generated log file tells me this:

[InstallShield Silent]
Version=v7.00.000
File=Log File
[ResponseResult]
ResultCode=0

So I'm a bit lost... According to this page the ResultCode says the installation is a success. But also...:

For a successful installation, the log file should look similar to the example below:

[InstallShield Silent]
Version=v5.00.000
File=Log File
[Application]
Name=KiXscripts Editor
Version=1.10.000
Company=RWK Systems, Inc.
[ResponseResult]
ResultCode=0

Notice the bold part. I'm missing the [Application] section in my log file.

Has anyone encountered this before and know of a possible cause or solution to this? Or do you experience with this app?

Regards,
Rowan

Have you checked the "Installation and Configuration Guide"? should be included when you downloaded the product or on the disc
See if the MicroStrategy 7 Installation and Configuration Guide helps in any way

If everything else fails then try asking in the Installation/Setup forum

Hi Kim,

I have read that guide indeed, as I said in my first post:
ORIGINAL: Rheuvel
As the Package KB and the vendors guide mentions:

setup.exe -L0007 --ResponseFile="<path>\response.ini" -f1"<path>\setup.iss" -f2"%temp%\microdt.log"

I guess I'll try the vendor forum instead. The thing is, it doesn't look like a problem specific to this app but more like the InstallShield wrapper failing to detect the app it has to install when running silently. So I was just hoping it was InstallShield problem that someone here has encountered before.

Well you didn't say which vendor guides did you ;)

Sorry, have not seen this issue (yet).

Have you checked that you don't have any duplicate entries in the .ini and .iss file as the .ini file (configurations) applies over the .iss.
What happens if you don't use the .ini responefile and vice verse?

It strikes me that you would have spent this time better figuring out the problem you had with your captured MSI. :-)

Hmm, ok, I tend to make a mess of big posts like that. Could have been more clear. 2nd quote in there mentions "Installation and Configuration Guide pdf" somewhere ;)

I have also tried it without the responsefile (ini), because that's the only switch out of line with the installshield parameters. Nothing changed.
I have left out the -L switch, nothing.
And I have removed the -s switch. At that point the answer file (.iss) doesn't work and I have to manually install it. (Is that default behavior? I have actually no experience with installshield setups, always have been able to repackage them until now)

Haven't tried running the install with only a response file yet. Will try that now, just to see what happens.

I might as well go back to that indeed -___-
I just can't stand it that the wrapper seems to "lose" the app when running silent. Even if I manage to get a working MSI I still want to know why this is happening actually.

While reading your post at the MicroStrategy forum you say it takes about 20sec and then ends.
If it takes long during manual install try adding the -SMS switch and see if that helps.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
