Solidworks 2013, Windows 8 - 64bit supported only

About 95% of the computers in our college will be using Windows 8 after the summer. I have just noticed that Solidworks 2013 32bit is not supported on Windows 8 32bit but will install on Windows 7 32bit. Has anyone got it installed to Windows 8 32bit through GP?

  • More often than not, "Not supported" is vendor-speak for "We haven't got round to testing it yet". Presumably your reference to Windows 7 means that that is your current OS, in which case I'd suggest just going ahead. Windows 8 isn't that radically different to 7, in terms of app functionality. - anonymous_9363 10 years ago
  • The Solidworks website is a little vague on support: http://www.solidworks.co.uk/sw/support/SystemRequirements.html

The above page seems to state some items are supported on Windows 8 64bit only, but then right at the bottom of the page is a section called 'Microsoft Products' where it lists Windows 8, but doesn't specify 32bit or 64bit:

Operating Systems Earliest Supported SolidWorks Version
    Windows 7 SolidWorks 2010 SP1
    Windows 8 SolidWorks 2013 SP0

Like VBScab has said, it should be okay - give it a go and get a pilot group of users to test and confirm functionality etc.
You could always contact the vendor and get a definitive answer.

  • When I run it manually on Windows 8 32 bit it gives a message saying it's not supported on this version of Windows and exits out. It will run manually on WIndows 7 32 bit. I've tried deploying through GP to WIndows 8 32 bit but the Solidworks.msi crashes out. Slightly confused as this is a similar process to how we've packaged it up in previous years. - alphabeta 10 years ago
  • You didn't say that though :) If it won't install manually on Windows 8 and drops you out with a not supported OS message then you're stuck.

Speak to the vendor (their product roadmap seems to say that 2013 will be supported until the end of next year) they'll be able to advise you about Windows 8. - dunnpy 10 years ago
