Sysprep hangs at "Setup is starting services"
When I apply a sysprepped system image and include formatting the drive as a preinstallation task, the image applies just fine. However, when I don't format the drive first, sysprep never finishes. It hangs at the initial screen that says "Setup is starting services" forever. I have left it overnight so we're talking 12+ hours. Any ideas why this is happening?
I have removed all pre and postinstallation tasks, removed the KACE Agent from the image, stopped additional services... Has anyone seen this?

Um you need to format the drive..........................
Otherwise your just copyinf files onto a fee part of the disk and completing freaking out the computer

You need to have "remove local files not in image" checked for this to work.
Is there any reason you wouldn't want to format before installing a new image?

The way KACE was sold to us was that it could do a compare/indexing thing that would only copy over changes and not the entire image, if you do desired. So you could restore a computer to it's original state basically. Am I mistaken about that? That was a BIG feature that we were looking forward to.
Obviously, that would involve not formatting the drive first, or else the entire image is pulled down ever time. This is straight from KACE's website:
Efficient state management allows for lightning-fast reimaging of systems by bypassing redundant file transfers and only applying changes to the original image.
How else is this to be understood, or accomplished if you're formatting the entire drive prior to downloading the image?

What I am guessing at this point is that the feature KACE is touting does not work on sysprepped images. If I tried it on identical hardware, it would probably work great. That's disappointing but we can work with that. - nheyne 11 years ago

When you format the drive, you may be unknowingly reordering the drives the way you need them? Many machines come from vendors with hidden partitions installed that may throw off your scripting.

When I deploy an image without formatting, it is to a recently formatted drive with a single partition. So I am literally setting up a machine with the exact image I want, and then reimaging that machine again with the same image to test the deployment. All I change between the two images is the preinstallation tasks that tell it to format the drive. - nheyne 11 years ago

You are check marking "remove local files not in image" correct? I would check the "include debug output in log" as well. See what you can see from that. - dugullett 11 years ago

Just in case anyone is still interested, I had success deploying a sysprepped WIM image without formatting first. But unfortunately it wasn't any faster because I imagine only the K-Image utilizes the special feature.
