Note
Deploying via GPO.
This is so simple.

1. Download.

2. Extract the files using Silverlight.exe /x (Which is one of the Microsoft defaults)

3. Create a PATCHED, Administrative installation.
msiexec /p silverlight.msp /a silverlight.msi

4. Assign the msi to the GPO and deploy.
Please note: Deploying via a logon script which is deployed via GPO is NOT deploying via GPO.

From the SilverLight Deployment Guide -

The registry setting that the administrative template files contain is:

Key path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SilverlightValue Name: UpdateMode

Value Type: DWORD

Valid Values:
Auto Updates 0x00000000
Prompted Updates 0x00000001
No Updates 0x00000002

The redistributable is in the form of a self-extracting cabinet file (.exe). You can run "silverlight.exe /q" to install it.

Or, if you unzip the .exe, you get silverlight.msi and silverlight.msp.

I ran the following command to install them:

msiexec /i silverlight.msi /update silverlight.msp /qn

Note
To stop Silverlight checking for updates, the Silverlight Enterprise Deployment Guide provides information about creating a custom ADM, but on various forums there has been questions about whether the setting is per-machine (as Microsoft state) or per-user (as people who do before and after snapshots are discovering).

The answer I got back from Microsoft when I queried this was:

Both locations are permissible for the UpdateMode. The user has access to HKCU, but any setting in HKLM overrides the HKCU setting. Therefore, while the user is able to continue modifying their preference, any admin preference determines the behavior of the control.

To remove Silverlight 1.x and 2.x silent use following parameter:

setup.exe /qu

Note: Watch the setup Version you're using! You cannot simply the use the 2.0.40115.0 Version to remove 2.0.31005.0 (for example).

I found some "hidden" switches documented in the Silverlight Deployment guide v.2 that I found extremely useful in my SMS deployment of silverlight 3

/ignorewarnings particularly useful because of the 1508 warning about restarting the browser preventing SMS from logging installations as successful

/noupdate I put this in so my computers don't complain about not having the latest version.

my command is "Silverlight.exe /q /ignorewarnings /noupdate"

This is a quick way for installing silverlight.

1.get silverlight @ http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx and save the exe into c:\silverlight

2.open a command prompt and go to c:\silverlight (or wherever you saved the exe) and run “silverlight.exe /extract”and hit ok.

3.you should now have 5 files in c:\silverlight. the next step is to extract the silverlight.msp out of the silverlight.7z file. use 7zip or universal extractor to extract silverlight.msp (this is a patch file for microsoft installers)

4.once you have extracted silverlight.msp, you can delete everything other than it and the silverlight.msi files. notice the size of the silverlight.msi

5. you could run “msiexec /p silverlight.msp /a silverlight.msi
after this admin install you will get a folder PFiles and you will notice that the size of msi will be more than before. Now we need only the msi to install

"msiexec /i silverlight.msi /update silverlight.msp /qn" is not a valid method.

You can apply a patch to an original msi by specifying /update patchname.msp. This will update your source msi but will not install anything.

After that you can install an msi with option /i packagename.msi

You cannot apply a patch and install the newly patched msi in one msiexec command.
