K2000 BIOS/PXE Boot Issues

This is a list of machines which we know have issues PXE booting with particular BIOS versions and also a list of machines that had issues previously, but the issue has been resolved.

To make sure the issue was not driver related we used the support provided driverpack. When you see KBE-DPA08x64 and KBE-DPA08x86 it means: KBE is K2000 boot environment, DPA08 is the version of the driverpack, x64 and x86 is the architecture used.

Models with Issues:

The following table includes models that currently have issues PXE booting.

Model

BIOS revision

Notes

Latitude Slate Tablet PC

A09

A09 - Fails to complete PXE boot.  Was not able to USB KBE network boot as a workaround.

XPS 13(L321X)

A08

A08 - Fails to complete PXE boot.  On A08 you can see the PXE menu but once the ISO loads, it stops at the "loading boot sector.... booting..." message and the NIC link lights die.

**Use A07 as a workaround

XPS 13(L322X)

A10

A10 - Fails to complete PXE boot. Will load the KBE and then reboot back to the BIOS screen

**Use A06 as a workaround

Venue 11 Pro

A04 - 5130

although the Venue Pro 11 will PXE, it doesn't work with the star-tech dongle or the usb2ethernet dongle, p/n part number TXXF8 that ships with the tablet [which is supposed to support pxe], just the doc or an asix usb2ethernet dongle. tested at latest a04 bios. Also, of note: the systems come in various models, as detailed in this article; http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=635828 models: 7130/7139 will function in legacy mode and can PXE boot, 5130 will not.

Resolutions:

The table below indicates models that had issues in the past, but an update BIOS version resolved the issue.  This table is maintained for the purpose of record keeping and as a means of knowing that a particular system needs updating.

Create dedicated KBE's to capture wim's and store externally for K2000 version 3.5

Do you want to easily be able to store your WIM's external from the k2000?  We use our site SAN's to store and deploy wim images via windows shares.

In version 3.4

http://www.itninja.com/blog/view/wim-storage-freeing-up-space-on-your-k2000-if-you-are-using-wim-s

Now for 3.5 mods

The deployment part is easy, all you need to do is create a preinstallion task to remap to the server.

start /wait net use t: /delete
start /wait net use t: \\dr-main.tmccadmn.tmcc.edu\image$ Password /user:tmccadmn\user
start /wait net use w: /delete
start /wait net use w: \\dr-main.tmccadmn.tmcc.edu\image$ Password /user:tmccadmn\user

or to a non domain server

start /wait net use t: /delete
start /wait net use t: \\10.16.19.152\images$ password /user:server\user
start /wait net use w: /delete
start /wait net use w: \\10.16.19.152\images$ password /user:server\user

The capture part is the pain, but we can automate that.

On your tech station that you have the waik, kbe_man and media manager installed on:

Download the KNIT 3.4 zip file from kace

https://downloads.kace.com/Login.aspx?returnUrl=/support/downloads/k2000/add-ons/knit34.zip

(you need an account from Kace)

unzip the download, in the "update files" directory you will see a bin file (wimcap_addon.21006php.bin)

open that bin file with 7-zip and extract the wimcap_addon.21006PHP.bin\wimcap_addon.21006PHP\upgrade\capture_wim.hta.php file.

Use notepad and edit that file and change  window.resizeTo 400,280 to  window.resizeTo 500,380 in the file.  Save that file as wim_cap.hta

copy wim_cap.hta to ...\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\Servicing and ...\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\Servicing

use the KBE_man to create a new boot env named something that makes sense to you.  I used DrMain32Capture, DrMain64Capture, MSAcad32Capture, etc

when it asks if you want to add custom lines say yes and use the 5 lines like below, modified for you environment.

net use t: /delete
net use t: \\10.16.19.152\images$ password /user:dr-acad\user
net use w: \\10.16.19.152\images$ password /user:dr-acad\user
mshta x:\servicing\wim_cap.hta
exit

this will boot and start the capture window like in 3.4 days

Post Installation Task Reboot v3.6

New v3.6 in the Postinstallation Task might reboot since the new task engine disables UAC and reboots.

Instead use the Reboot Required within the Post Installation Task and remove any runonce converter or reboot task.
