K1000: Updating VMWare Tools

If you need to upgrade the VMware tools for your virtual machine you can use the following steps to mount the iso inisde the VM and upgrade

First, upgrade your virtual machine to the latest hardware version:

  • Make sure that the machine is powered down.
  • In the VMware Server web interface, select the virtual machine from the Inventory panel.
  • Click Upgrade Virtual Machine in the Status section of the workspace.
  • Click OK to confirm that you want to upgrade the virtual machine. Do not power the machine back on yet.
  • Then, change the Guest OS from "Other (x64)" to "FreeBSD (x64)"
  • In VMware Server web interface, select the virtual machine from the Inventory panel.
  • In the Commands section of the workspace, click Configure VM.
  • In the Guest Operating System section of the General tab, select "FreeBSD (x64)"
  • Power on the machine.

Lastly, we will install VMware tools:

  • In VMware Server web interface, select the virtual machine from the Inventory panel.
  • Click Install VMware Tools in the Status section of the machine's Summary tab.
  • If an earlier version of VMware Tools is installed, click Upgrade VMware Tools.
  • This will mount the ISO in the VM, so we can install it via the machine's web interface.
  • Login to the web interface of the machine by accessing it by hostname/FQDN or IP address
  • Click on Settings & Maintenance > Appliance Maintenance > Edit > Update VMware Tools
  • Once the Update Status shows that it has completed, reboot the machine.

  • I'm trying to follow these instructions but I cannot find where the various sections are that you've described. For example, first you say "Click Upgrade Virtual Machine in the Status section of the workspace" but I can't find any Status section or a link that says click Upgrade Virtual Machine. You say "In the Commands section of the workspace, click Configure VM", again can't find this section on the web interface, and lastly you say "In the Guest Operating System section of the General tab, select "FreeBSD (x64)", again I cannot find any of these sections. Can you please give more specific details? I'm using the vSphere Web Interface for VMware 5.1...thanks. - ACAST 8 years ago
  • I am not sure for VMWare 5.1, we are on 5.5 and you need to go to VSphere, right-click on the KACE VM--> Guest--> Install/Upgrade VM Tools and then go to your KACE appliance --> Appliance Updates--> Update VMWare Tools. - Hrkljus 8 years ago
  • I wasn't able to mount the ISO it keeps failing. VMware website says they don't support FreeBSD on ESX. So I guess I can't use KACE since it can't be kept compliant?? - storieddeth 5 years ago
