New InstallShield® Technology Creates Bridge Between Design and Deployment to Automate the Configuration and Management of Distributed Enterprise Systems

LOS ANGELES (PDC 2005)—September 15, 2005—Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), today announced that it will provide an important bridge between Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System and Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) for distributed enterprise applications. The new technology, which was demonstrated by Bob Muglia during his keynote address at PDC05, is based on industry-standard InstallShield® and provides the ability to quickly and reliably deploy applications via SMS across distributed systems that are designed and validated using Visual Studio 2005 Team System. This announcement underscores Macrovision’s leadership and innovation in installation solutions for the enterprise and represents a significant expansion of the company’s strategic relationship with Microsoft.

“Macrovision’s expertise and understanding of automating complex, interdependent software configuration across large, distributed systems makes the company an excellent option for customers looking to extend the capabilities of Visual Studio 2005 Team System, which provides greater value to our many mutual enterprise customers,” said Rick Laplante, general manager of Visual Studio Team System at Microsoft Corp. “In bridging the gap between the design of distributed systems and the deployment of applications across those systems, Macrovision is reducing complexity, streamlining the continuum between development and operations and providing an essential component in realizing the vision behind Microsoft’s Dynamic Systems Initiative.”

TodayÂ’s software systems are comprised of numerous distributed services, spanning platforms, protocols and programming languages, all with significant impact on the operations environment. The successful deployment of new solutions depends on continuous collaboration and communication between development and operations. Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System is designed to address these issues by providing tightly integrated and extensible lifecycle tools to increase the predictability of the software development process.

The underlying data model used by Visual Studio 2005 Team System, the System Definition Model (SDM), provides a standard for modeling and describing complex distributed systems. MacrovisionÂ’s new technology enables enterprises to quickly and easily package these applications for deployment directly from the Visual Studio Team SystemÂ’s SDM model. By automating the translation from the SDM model into packages that can configure servers, Macrovision creates a repeatable flow from design to deployment, resulting in greater accuracy, improved reliability and reduced implementation and maintenance costs.

“Microsoft’s decision to work with Macrovision to develop an automated solution from design through deployment is a perfect fit with our mission to significantly reduce the operating costs associated with today’s complex, distributed applications,” said Daniel Greenberg, VP Product Management & Marketing for Macrovision’s Software Technologies Division. “We’re excited at the opportunity to build on our long-standing relationship with Microsoft. By taking advantage of this comprehensive solution for automating the myriad of processes associated with deploying complex software, enterprises can drive increased value from software investments and spend more time on their core business.”
