10.8 netboot creation

I am trying to create a netboot set for 10.8. We just got the kace for our office and so are learning as we go.

We HAD version 3.4.xxxx and yesterday we brought it up to 3.5.xxx since 10.8 netboot requires 3.5.

So I have the media manager on the mac I want to make the netboot on. It is a Mini and so does not have a dvd-rom. I have the download from apple and I have pulled out the dmg and I have also created an iso for the 10.8 installer.

Now, the issue I have is that I can open the media manager and put in the ip for the kace, a name, but when I go to select the source, all my sources are greyed out. Doesn't matter where I place them and permissions on them are set to read/write.

The mac is not on the same subnet but should that matter for just creating a netboot? I can safely say that no mac will ever be on the kace subnet. If this is an issue, what are some suggestions to work around this?

Netbooting isn't supported across subnets. Also, make sure you are using the 3.5 Media Manager.

If I recall correctly, the current recommendation would be to capture the image on the same subnet and then use the sudo bless command or a Remote Site Appliance to deploy the image across subnets.

  • Read almost all of those already but they didn't really say yes or not to just creating the netboot.
So I assume creating the netboot on a different subnet will not work but is that why the paths to my media are greyed out?

Also, must I use the netboot set created with the media manager, or is it possible to use one I have from Deploy Studio? I have a new 1 I created with that. Netboots sets should be the same regardless of what program created them, I would think. - jon.schwende 10 years ago
    • The KACE Netboot includes KACE specific tools, so you will need to use that one. - andrew_lubchansky 10 years ago

You can thank apple for that.

We added RSAs to the subnets we needed to deploy image macs.  To capture I have one port in my office in the server subnet the kace is on.

Verify that you are using the Media Manager 3.5 (just reinstall it from K2) and that the version of your downloaded 10.8 media matches the version of 10.8 on the Mini (10.8.3).  Generally, you will also want to use your newest/best hardware when creating the Netboot set, because drivers will be taken from the host machine.  Also, are you mounting the InstallESD file from within the installation media?

You should not need the Netboot option or the ability to Netboot to upload the Media.
