Adobe Pro and Reader 9.2 Patch

Has anybody found an efficient way to deploy the recent Adobe Acrobat Pro and Reader 9.2 patches? Specifically updating administrative install points and patching exisiting 9.1.2 or 9.1.3 user installations.

When I try to update my AIP using the command: msiexec /p AcroPro920Patch.msp /a \\server\Adobe9Pro\acropro.msi

I get the error: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch"

I can apply the AcroPro920Patch.msp to an existing Acrobat Pro install no problem.

Also I cannot apply the AdbeRdrUpd920_mui_cum.msp to an existing Reader 9.1.3 install. I get the same error.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just took over performing the duties of packaging and distributing software on the day that this security issue came up ... so this has been a nice learning experience. Our previous guy was layed off. But I might add that I signed up for the ability to distribute adobe reader through adobe's website and they sent me a link to download the product. Which I did. Of course the link was to the 9.0 version not 9.2 ! And in my newness I deployed the wrong version. So now I am realizing the error. Just thought I would mention incase anyone else followed their direct link to the download instead of navigating through the website to download 9.2

I have a 9.1.3 AIP that I then send out via GPO.

I'm a little lost exactly how to go about this. Do I just need to delete this AIP I have and create a new one using the 9.2 MSI file? Or can I run the 9.2 MSI using the following command in that article to overwrite 9.1.3 on the AIP.

msiexec /i <path of msi on AIP> REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus

I'm paranoid so would either create a backup of the 913 AIP and create a new 920 one, or ensure that I had a copy of both on a staging server or similar.

You would use '/I' to install to a client. Use '/A' to create the AIP. For the latter, REINSTALL/REINSTALLMODE are irrelevant.

I'm getting the same message

I get the error: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch"

I even tried uninstalling, then reinstalling 9.1, then the 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 updates, then running the 9.2 msp but still get the same message.

I had used SMS to push 9.1.0, then the 9.1.1 9.1.2 9.1.3 .mps files, but using the same command line for this 9.2 .msp file, i get that error. Any thoughts?

Did you follow the correct route (see post #4) and, if so, did the 9.1.3 patch get applied? To check, open the MSI in Orca and check ProductVersion.

Originally no, as I had started with 9.1.0 then went to 9.1.1 9.1.2 then 9.1.3, then tried the 9.2 on top of that.

Do you really have to go all the way back to 9.0? I had started at 9.1. We never had 9.0 installed on our workstations here.

If I have to go back to 9.0, that's not going to work in my environment. Would you recommend I just run the install msi rather than the updater msp?

Adobe have a numbering scheme for releases, the details of which I've forgotten (I'll leave it to you to look it up) but I think the crucial part is to miss out 9.1.1.

Just as a side note can someone link me to the 9.12 --> 9.20 patch?

When I try and download it from the Adobe site I end up with a 275 meg file that doesn't work. The link says the file is only 22 megs but that is not what you get when you click on it.. I am assuming there is just an MSP for the update?

Another brilliant move by Adobe, lets not let people use the .msp to patch from the latest version prior to the last update to 9.2.

Sounds like you got the same link I did, its saying 22MB when I go there too. Try it again.

The subject has been done to death in the 'Package Development' forum.

Essentially, Adobe's patches aren't cumulative: you need to apply them incrementally, depending on the base MSI version. If you log the patch process, you'll be able to determine the specific product which it's searching for.

This document would be relevant if they had updated it when 9.2 came out. But they haven't yet.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/498/cpsid_49880.html

After a bit of trial and error, this is the order you must patch to get 9.2 into your AIP:
9.0 -> 9.1.0
9.1.0 -> 9.1.2
9.1.2 -> 9.2.0

If you already have 9.1.3 in your AIP, you'll have to create a new AIP from the original source.

That worked perfectly. It would be really nice if Adobe could update their website, otherwise how would anyone know? Thank you for letting all of us know.

Adobe's site is a little like IBM's: the information is there, you just have to spend endless days trying to find it. This article leads you to that article which leads to the other...[repeat ad nauseum]
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
