Agentless Inventory for Servers

It's strange to me that there seem to be no (or at least very few) questions on IT Ninja about agentless inventorying. We would love to be able to use agentless provisioning on our Windows servers, but it seems that you cannot use that feature for Windows devices. We have 50+ servers and it is really a waste to have to keep licenses for those since our only purpose to get get an inventory of them. Is it at all possible to set up an agentless monitoring solution for these?

Not at this time. There was some discussion about the merits of an Inventory-only agent during last month's Dell World User Forum.

  • Thanks rockhead. I guess that's something for the uservoice forum as that would be a very handy feature. - horstj 9 years ago

If the SNMP service is available and configured on the Windows device you can add it as an agentless device to the inventory. I just did it.
I did it and works...the only problem may be the amount of information we are able to ''carve'' from the Microsoft Windows SNMP and what info the  Microsoft implementation of this protocol currently provides.

That is correct. Discovery for printers, switches...etc. will not consume a license. Once you provision it for inventory, it does.

Note that customers who owned K1 before 2/23/2015 currently have a grace period to inventory non-computer devices (printers...etc.) at no cost. We will begin enforcing the licensing counts in the next release (v6.3 + 1). (Computers are not included.)

K1000 v6.3, released on February 23, 2015 added agentless Windows inventory to the Mac, Linux and UNIX agentless inventory that was released in v6.0 in March, 2014.

Note further that v6.3 adds server Monitoring as well.

Check out the admin guide for details.

  • Awesome! Thanks for the update Ken. Do you know if agentless inventory of Windows devices counts toward the node license count? I know the previous rule of thumb was that if the device was Windows, it used a license. Just wondering how that works now. - horstj 9 years ago
    • Yes it does. You can do all the discovery without consuming a license count, but after you provision it for inventory (either agent or agentlessly), it consumes a license node count. Hope this helps! - KenG 9 years ago
      • Is that the case for other devices as well such as printers, switches, etc? - horstj 9 years ago
