Best utilization of the product.

Good morning Everyone,

I recently started working at a new job, where they have a k2000 appliance. Looking it over, they are currently only using it for imaging. While I am aware there is also a k1000 appliance, I'm trying to use the hardware and software they have to the best of my ability before requesting new hardware.

That said, I see within the k2000 there is some form of inventory management. I can't seem to get this to work. The network scan seems to be intermittent at best, and when the machines are showing up, it's not pulling any real info from them. Is there a best practices for getting these devices to show up? Am I wasting my time by even bothering? I mostly just want it as a reference, so I can pull up system specs or something to that tune for a device without having to use yet ANOTHER different program (We also have Meraki, and PDQ Inventory... trying to remove duplicate software).

I hope that was clear.

the inventory is only necessary if you are doing scheduled deployments so you can target the machine on boot.  If you are just reimaging machines, when you pxe boot they will show up.  Remember every one you bring in the inventory will consume a license and that is not necessary unless you are using the k2 automated.

Here at the college for Academics we will apply an image to an entire room using the schedule image feature so we keep all those machines in inventory.  On the Administrative and lab machines we pxe boot and deploy an image that way.  I delete all the admin and lab machines regularly to save having to purchase more licenses.  We have 2400 machines and I have 2200 licenses on the k2.  I keep 1800 Acad stations in the k2 and that gives us 400 licenses to work with imaging on the admin side at any time.

  • BTW if you want to do any support other then imaging look at the K1. The K2 is designed to do multiple os platform deployments and post installs. It is not meant to do daily support or inventory, that is the k1's job. They really compliment each other in the abilities of the appliances. - SMal.tmcc 7 years ago
