Can a Smart Label Be Dependent on Another Smart Label?

I've created a smart label that uses the "Label Names" "contains" setup, that the test button shows to work, but that doesn't work in reality (even after several forced inventories).

I'm not asking (at this time) why my smart label is not working; I'm just asking if a smart label can reliably depend on another smart label, and if not, why not?

Thanks!

Answer Summary:
Apparently smart labels are not "persistent" over check-ins, but are rather "erased" and re-added at each check-in, which makes the order of checking/application of individual labels crucial.

yes, it can.
But you need understand how a smart label works.
When a smart label is checked (for devices at check in for instance) the first smart label needs to be checked and filled before the second one is checked.
Go to Home |Smart Labels |Order LabelsĀ  and order them. The lower the "order" number the earlier they are checked.

  • Thank you. The answer "yes" answers my question.

Your explanation doesn't quite answer my next question of why my smart label is not working, but it hinted at it, enough that I can guess what's happening.

I *thought* that once a smart label was applied, it would stay applied until the condition changed. So on the first check-in, the first label gets applied, and then on the second check-in, the second label should be able to see the first, and itself then get applied.

But apparently (in essence), on each check-in, all the smart labels get "erased", and then all the conditions are checked to re-add the applicable labels back. This is why the ordering matters; the second label never sees that the first was applied, even though the first was applied at the last check-in.

That's the detail I was missing. Thank you for leading me to it.

I lowered the order of my first label and now the system is behaving as I expect. - kentwest 4 years ago

Go to Home | Label Management | Smart Labels | Choose Option (the drop down) |Order Labels | <choose the label type> to order them as you like.
