Desktop Authority 9.0.3, Folder redirection and offline files
I'm wondering how we can make offline files work say a server or network connection goes down, the end users end up with dissapearing desktop icons and documents.
We use DA 9.0.3 and the folder redirection element. I was looking in Group Policy at the Offline files setting, but from what I read the policy "Administratively assigned offline files" does not take variables such as %username%.
Basically the path is \\domain.com\dfs\users\%username%. I don't want to say allow the entire \users\ portion of that path, becuase I don't want many many gigabytes of every employee's folder downloading to the client. Not sure if that would even happen because we use access based enumeration, but for domain admins such as myself, I can see every folder and I don't want all 90+ GB of that downloading to every PC I log in to!
So how do we specify the users folders and all subfolders since this is the path:
\\domain.com\dfs\users\%username%... Desktop, Favorites, Start Menu, Documents.

Create a drive mapping like H: \ (for Home) to \ \ domain.com \ dfs \ users \% username% ...
Then create the redirect to H: \ Desktop. This works and the offline folder is enabled to.

We used to map the U: drive and then do folder redirection to U: . This caused a major issue when we would roll out ScriptLogic updates. SL would detect updated client files needed to be installed, but there is a bug (IMO) in the order of operations that SL does. It would attempt to run the MSI update but then the MSI would fail miserably because there was no "desktop". There was no desktop because SL tried to run the update BEFORE it mapped the drives (simple oversight). So we changed folder redirection to UNC Paths because this is resolvable and accessible whether a drive is mapped or not. - kjstech 10 years ago
