Does thin client require any application packaging?

Hi,

I have been packaging applications for desktops and laptops using Wise and AdminStudio. My new company have some thin clients. I am just wondering if it is necessary to do packaging for thin clients?  Thanks.

Depends on how "thin" the client is.  Fundamentally, the thin client is nothing more than a dumb terminal which does no local processing and just provides a screen and keyboard for a user to run apps on a remote computer server.
However, given the low cost of significant processing power, it is possible to use quite powerful computers as thin clients, allowing some apps to run locally but others to run on a server.
So if your thin client only runs apps running on remote systems then there will be no requirement to package for the thin client. However, there may still be a requirement to package for the back end server(s) depending on the architecture of the system and the number of servers providing the application services.

I second that...

I do a lot of packaging for Citrix and VDI solutions.

Project managers think 'thin clients' work with magic beans and air (bless them).

In the background, there is a whopping great big server running the apps. I would suggest, yes, they need to be packaged for installation on the server, so the thin client can access them.

If you only have ONE app, then you could manually install it onto two servers (for redundancy), but if you only had ONE app, it would be unlikely to have thin clients. Essentially your 'fat' PC is making the thin connection, via a piece of software (that should be 'packaged').

As for the thin client, generally no packaging, but they do need to be configured, normally they just boot, pick up an IP address, run a light web interface and present apps that can be launched and ran (or processed) on the big server. The user just sees the out put on the screen they are looking at.

...and some clients refer to the use of browser-based apps as "thin client". These may required ActiveX control(s) which should be packaged.
