Future in packaging? Other areas to go in to
Hi,
More of a general question really. I've been in packaging (UK based) since I graduated 10 years ago. Been mainly on migration projects using msi and app-v. I'm in my early 30s now and am getting increasingly worried if I've wasted 10 years of my life in a specialised area that has no future due to automation and what not, and an area which has a fairly low income ceiling.
Is there any other areas I could/should be looking at getting into? I probably should have thought about this before, but recently it's started to really bug and worry me. Looking at the london job market, there's hardly any packaging jobs going, and even if they are, they want things like an sccm expert and rolling multiple jobs into one.

Hi,
you've basically answered your own question. Whilst packaging jobs are still out there, the willingness to pay decent money for good quality packages is dwindling, therefore start concentrating on things like SCCM / Altiris / Landesk etc. as an alternative stream for a source of income. No time is life is wasted, as long as you've learned from the mistakes you've made ;-)

Any experience is good experience. However, as you've noticed, there isn't much demand anymore for someone who only does application packaging. You may need to learn some new skills. Maybe you'd be interested in PowerShell scripting, or becoming ITIL certified or getting into security. There's lot's of ways to go, you just need to decide what you want to do.
