Getting 1638 on Silverlight upgrade, can someone help?

I recently jumped into testing installing via GPO - I have everything on its own policy including silverlight.  A new version recently comes out, but if I try to deploy it (or for that matter, run it directly) I get a 1638 already installed error.  I set it up as an upgrade to the previous software installation and even requested that the prior version be uninstalled but it still does not appear to work.  Would appreciate any help.

Deploy Silverlight.exe, not silverlight.msi. Every release of Silverlight uses the same ProductCode. You should use Microsoft's installation wrapper to handle installation and upgrade scenarios. It checks what version you have and handles the upgrade appropriately. However, I'm not sure if you can easily deploy this via GPO.

Are windows updates enabled on the workstations. If yes, then the silverlight patch would already have installed on your workstation.

Comments:
  • no - the workstation in question had the prior version installed via GPO. For some reason it thinks the new one I'm trying to install is the same one, which it isn't. Kind of giving me nightmares of dealing with Adobe patches. I know that the silverlight setup is kind of weird. The msi in the .exe file is something like version 1 but it comes with an msp file which you use to patch. Really strange. Anyway, no Windows updates are not the issue. - hipsterdoofus 11 years ago
