How can I force Google Earth to appear in the Start->Programs shortcut list through the MSI? Or even a desktop shortcut?

I followed http://www.itninja.com/software/google/google-earth/7-508 and http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html and the program installs beautifully EXCEPT I have no way via the msi command line to get the program to appear on the desktop nor Start->programs list shortcut. Here's my current manually configured install on my uploaded zip file:

Works:
msiexec.exe /i "GoogleEarthWin\Google Earth.msi" /qn /l c:\windows\temp\googleEarth.log

Tried unsucessfully:
msiexec.exe /i "GoogleEarthWin\Google Earth.msi" /qn /l c:\windows\temp\googleEarth.log DESKTOPSHORTCUT=1

Help????

  • If u just wish to create shortcut on the desktop why dont u create a transform over the MSI and create the desktop shortcut and delete the start menu|Programs shortcut. Sounds good? - talonsprem87 10 years ago
  • modifying transforms is fine, but the charm is in NOT modifying files (and thus alleviating potential typos, etc.). The solution to set the MSI install property to ALLUSERS=1 was the ticket. Thanks, though! - cmgreene 10 years ago

Did you set the installation per-machine? Add the property ALLUSERS=1 in the installation to be sure. And verify in the Shortcut table if the shortcuts are correctly created.

Comments:
  • How are you deploying the package? If you're using something like SCCM or Radia, it will be installing using the local System account and if the shortcut is destined for the user rather than all users, it will be appearing in that account's profile which, naturally enough, is "invisible" when you log in as an ordinary user.

As noted above, make sure you're installing for all users/per-machine.

Also, I presume you're using the correct package? The license terms for the default prohibit commercial use, if I recall correctly. - anonymous_9363 10 years ago
