Java update through a patch schedule

We are deploying Java(TM) 6 Update 31 (6.0.310) using patch schedule on our K1000. Unlike OS patches, Java patch won't install on SOME machines untill all the browser windows are closed. However, it installes fine on some machines with browser windows up and running.

Does anyone know a workaround for this issue besides updating Java through MI or a sript?

I'm thinking the failure is not related to the browser being active per se, but rather to the JRE being in use at time of installation..

Ona generic mode you can write a script to check if the browser is open ,in case iopen it should prompt the message to user and then close the browser. You can run a clock countdown to set Java install say after 5 min of message display.Install Java

Hope it works!
