KACE Product Support Question

K2000 Windows 7 Gold image deployment to other laptops

06/27/2012 6068 views

Hi guys,

Joined a new company which have both the K1000 and K2000. We have a problem where whenever we deploy our golden image to other laptops. it is presented with the following message. The Computer restarted unexpectedly an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click "ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.

Not sure whether I am doing the imaging correctly, Whats the best why to do it? It there a step-by-step process.

Managed to find this which sorts out the problem and Im able to boot into windows.

On the same error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a black Window. (a command prompt window)

type the word "regedit"(without the inverted commas and hit enter. That will open the registry editor.

In the Registry Editor..

Browse to....

HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highliting childcompletion,on the right hand side check for setup.exe. if the value is 1 change it to 3.(by double clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box).

If editing the registry like you mention works to make the image deploy, then create a midlevel (post install task that runs in k2000 boot environment) to load the registry of your machine, modify the registry setting, then unload it.

Alternatively, you could download the hive to your machine, load it, make the change, then replace the hive in the image browser, saving/committing the changes.

With windows 7 you want to use either a scripted install or a sysprep'd image.  If you just image a machine and deploy that you will have duplicate Sid's.  It will be a disaster if you use KMS or join them to a domain.

  • Yeah I know about the duplicate sid's. The process which I was doing was syspreping the golden image, with the generalized tick box. Taking the image using KACE then dumping it back to the remaining laptops. Upon dumping it back to the remaining laptops I was getting the error I outlined in my original post. The fix I suggested sorts the error and enables me to dump back a sysprep'd image of my golden image.
