KACE K1000 - How does Dell Update Catalog work?

I've been using Kace K1000 for a couple of years, but have never used the "Dell Updates" section. However, we're discussing pushing out drivers via KACE so I started looking into it. Currently, under All Packages, the Dell Update Catalog only shows 38 updates, and they seem to be for a bunch of random stuff that doesn't pertain to our environment. I set up a Detect schedule and ran it (twice) on my machine yesterday to see if this would trigger the catalog to pull down more updates, but it did not. Is there a way to get more, relevant drivers in this catalog?

The issue may be related to the exact Model that the Detect schedule was run on.
The Dell Updates Catalog (pulled in and used by the KACE SMA) only contains updates for the "Enterprise Client" business class models on the list found here: Dell Updates Catalog Supported Models.  Is your test machine one of the models listed?

Additionally, The Dell Catalog files will only contain the latest version available for the compatible systems, so any previous version will not be listed in the catalog.

Also, the SMA will need to be able to reach out to "downloads.dell.com" to be able to retrieve the update packages.  You can take a look at the "Settings > Logs > K1000 Log" after refreshing the catalog (Security > Dell Updates > Update Subscription > Refresh Now) and if there are any new files downloaded you will see an entry in the log similar to:

[Wed Jul 1 8:17:58 CDT 2020] [notice] K1000 fetching http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER03918257M/1/5130A07_64Bit.exe

with a similar entry for each package that is being downloaded.

  • Thanks for the info! We are using 7390 which aren't on that list, so that explains it. Are there plans to support more Dell models? - winterelegy 3 years ago
    • The updates catalog is pulled in, in it's entirety, from Dell, so that would be up to dell to add models to the "Enterprise Client" business class models on their list. - Moncus 3 years ago
  • Wow, those are some very old models on that list, nothing in the last 7-8 generations of OptiPlex. I have the exact same behavior on my SMA (10.1). Quest support told me that this is a defect that they are working on. - sramsey 3 years ago
    • That is good information! did they give you the Jira defect number? - Moncus 3 years ago
      • They referenced K1-21053 for the defect. - sramsey 3 years ago
  • There's a hotfix out for 10.2 - KB 322855. My test box now has 4,088 Dell updates listed in the Catalog. - sramsey 3 years ago
    • Thank you! I thought for sure our firewall was the issue, but this was it. https://support.quest.com/kace-systems-management-appliance/kb/322855/dell-updates-do-not-display-server-client-catalog-entries - JonHall 3 years ago
