KBE DISKPART does not assign drive letter to USB drive, USB drive info = hidden on Optiplex 7040

I'm in the process of building yet another KBE, this time to suit Optiplex 7040 SFF.

Usually I follow these instructions to test that the network driver I supply on my USB drive is the one that is missing, and then update/recache drivers and rebuild KBE. However, this time I'm having an unusual problem early on in the game.

In KBE's command prompt (right after it fails to find my kbox due to lack of network driver), my USB drive shows as Hidden and not assigned a letter in DISKPART.

I can attempt to assign it a letter, but it remains Hidden and I cannot access files on it after I assign the drive letter (g: in this case).

I only have 1 seed unit of Optiplex 7040 to test so I don't know if it's the model. However in the OS DISKPART finds the drive fine.

Haven't run into this one before -- has anyone else?

let the kbe boot all the way then insert the usb stick

Comments:
  • Alas, no difference. I let the KBE load as far as it would (to error unable to mount kbox share, system error 1231), inserted USB drive, same result.

Also, different USB drives behave the same -- also no difference between USB ports. - agibbons 8 years ago
    • what format is the usb stick? - SMal.tmcc 8 years ago
      • NTFS. However the KBE's DISKPART proclaims the un-lettered, hidden drive as FAT, and a strange/inaccurate size. - agibbons 8 years ago
      • format it as fat all mine are and they show in the kbe - SMal.tmcc 8 years ago
      • Thanks for the idea! I reformatted it as FAT, and the DISKPART behavior has not changed (still no drive letter, still hidden). I can try reformatting another one of my USB drives, but it's odd that I've never had this problem before when they were NTFS. - agibbons 8 years ago
      • are the ports usb 3.0, if so you to add the usb 3 drivers to the kbe - SMal.tmcc 8 years ago
      • Some of the USB ports on the unit are USB 3.0, but I'm using the 2.0 ports. - agibbons 8 years ago
      • what winpe version are you using? - SMal.tmcc 8 years ago
      • Coincidentally, my next move was to attempt using WinPE5 and just start the "build a new KBE" process. During THAT process I'm running into another issue with folders that won't delete on kbox\drivers...so!

I'm waiting to hear from Support on that issue, and then will rebuild my KBE one more time and see if a new KBE build with WinPE5 drivers resolves the DISKPART/usb issue as well! Will keep the thread posted when I know more. - agibbons 8 years ago
      • I am using PE10 for all my images (7 on up), I would try pe10, that one will have more drivers in it - SMal.tmcc 8 years ago
      • Cool. Once support helps me get this stuck folder deleted, if WinPE5 doesn't work I'll definitely move on up to 10. - agibbons 8 years ago
      • Hello again! Got my folder problem straightened out in \kbox\drivers. The lastest rebuild of the KBE for Optiplex 7040 still failing, Windows Boot manager saying file: iaStorB.sys is missing or corrupt.

Drivers I'm currently using in the KBE folder are WinPE10, as well as chipset, serial ata, and network drivers I manually downloaded based off my seed unit's Service Tag.

Kind of the same deal as the first comment on this page: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/11662.optiplex-7040-windows-7-driver-pack#pi40900=1

So, this may have to turn into a completely new question! I can't even get far enough now to know whether my USB problem is fixed :) - agibbons 8 years ago

I had all kinds of problems building a KBE for Optiplex 7040. The USB drives first, then later other errors referencing Intel storage devices...

I think the answer is: build a KBE that is only for Optiplex 7040, using only drivers for 7040.
