KCleanup.exe stalling on 20H2

Hi Everyone,

My colleague recently setup a new Win 10 Enterprise 20H2 image on our SDA. We've been using the streaming template for a long time and our standardized image creation process has stayed the same. For the first time, our deployments are hanging on running c:\kcleanup.exe. If we close this window it's fine. We've checked our BitDefender Anti-Virus logs and have not seen anything quarantined and even opened a ticket with Quest Support with our debug logs (they said that everything looked normal). Have any of you being running into the same issue?

I'm planning on testing uploading the WIM as alternative to using the streaming template since I read that it should not run kcleanup if the SDA reads it as sysprepped. Is there a way to flag it as sysprepped with the streaming template?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • Thanks for your response Channeler. I'll create a scripted install with the vanilla ISO when I am in the office later this week and see if I run into the same issue.

We domain join after deployment but do have AV installed as a post-install task by the KACE. I'll check with my colleague to see how it went with the AV not included in the deployment. He's been testing an updated AV policy to see if this corrects the issue.

The streaming template is indeed the legacy method from the link you provided. I'm going to give the supported method a try as well. I've held off on switching to the direct upload method since it gives us a bit more flexibility in where I host images but if it would help reduce headaches like these it might be the best approach. - rheffern 3 years ago

Have you tried to reproduce this with a vanilla Windows ISO via Scripted Install? (same Win10  20H2 version)

Is the same thing happening without joining to a domain and\or having an AV installed?
(included in the Image or installed via GPO or installed via Post Install task, regardless of the scenario take it out, and try again).

Also What exactly is a Stream Template?
If you're talking about this:
https://www.itninja.com/blog/view/kace-streaming-wim-toolkit-kswim

Support for this was dropped in version 5.1 back in early 2018.
That's a now a built in function. (Deploy directly from server).
