Looking to append the HOSTS file

Long story short, we are running in to an issue with our DNS.

Users can't connect to our website from the internal network. They give it a minute, and it works again.

We found there is a workaround in place, a batch file that deletes the internal entries from DNS, runs every few minutes or so.

I'd like to implement a better fix for this, but I've inherited KACE, and never really dealt with it before.

My thoughts were to append the HOSTS file on endpoints to point to the hosted website, but not sure how this can be done from KACE.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • findstr /I 127.0.0.1.*localhost "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" || echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>> "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

    I didn't try this for real but it might work, as long as you enter the correct IP and host name. No warranty of course. - flip1001 1 year ago

the easiest way would be:
Create a hosts file as you like it.
Use File Sync (Distribution | File Syncronization) to deploy it to the end points.

But this would really only be a workaround. Fix your DNS is the better way.

  • Agreed, but with the mountain of work already on our plates, this is the best solution right now. This is far out of scope for my role, but as I have been voluntold to be KACE administrator going forward, I'm sick of the tickets saying "The website isn't working...oh wait, it's working now" Or "When are you guys going to fix the website?"

    I'm also looking for something to append the file, not overwrite it. It sounds like the only way you've seen this in action is with File Sync? - isaac.ironwing 1 year ago
    • well, the alternate would be a script which >> the new lines. But this would be a problem if you add mulitple times the same lines and the file becomes larger and larger. - Nico_K 1 year ago
      • We only plan on adding the one line at this time. Are you able to offer some help with creating such a script in KACE? - isaac.ironwing 1 year ago
