MAC Mountain Lion - using colors in finder - how does that actually work?

I am working on tracking down an issue we are having with MAC Finder acting irredically (jumping people to the root of the share) on a network storage device and I believe the issue might be related to folders/ files that have been colored (labled).  Does anyone know how the colors/ labels actually work?  I was expecting to find a .ds file or some other hidden file when I colored/ labeled a file/ folder but none was created.  Any insight would be helpful.

Watch the video (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2r9Eb5L73m-aE43YTVrU2tQUUE/edit?usp=sharing) for what I mean in regards to MAC Finder acting irredically; note that I did not click on anything for this to occur.

Any other suggestions/ thoughts as to why finder is acting like this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ok found the .ds_store file one directory up from where I was. I believe the color/ label information is there. Also found this http://support.grouplogic.com/?p=1574 - Jbr32 10 years ago

I think I am on to something.  Take a look at my wireshark info.  One chart shows the IO with a network share (on the same server) that does not use labels (colors); much less IO.  The other chart shows the IO with a network share (same server) that does use labels; much more IO.  What do you think?
