Managing or Monitoring Printers in Kace

I was wondering if there was a good way to monitor Printers through Kace. I saw that Dell OpenManage printer Manager could send email notifications and thought this might be able to be setup similar to Dell OpenManage Essentials? Has anyone done this or is there a guide if it is possible? If not has anyone came up with any other solutions for doing this with Kace?

Several of the big manufacturers of office network printers offer free tools for managing printers, and the tools are not restricted to that manufacturer's printers. (Many printers will answer common SNMP inquiries using standard responses, which these tools can interpret.)

The best known tool is HP Web JetAdmin, which can communicate with many manufacturer's printers. We're using Xerox CentreWare Web, which can do this kind of monitoring on Xerox, HP, Canon, Ricoh, and Lexmark printers and MFDs. Both are freely downloadable from their manufacturer's Web sites.

I don't know who makes Dell's printers these days. When I last looked at Dell printers about five years ago, they were made by Lexmark.

About all the K1000 can do with printers (actual physical devices on the network, not the printer connections installed on client computers) is to find them with IP Scan and assign SmartLabels. I recommend you start with one of these free printer management tools. Sande

I have to agree with Sande here; the K1 wasn't ever intended for this sort of thing and is no comparison to the free tools she mentioned. Having everything in one basket is cool, but sometimes having a different tool is a bigger win. I did do something nifty years ago to use the database in WebJet to sync the data into the K1 asset database, but enough has changed in both tools that it doesn't work that way anymore. But worth a think if it's useful in your environment.

Here's a link to the Kace KKE's
[link]http://www.kace.com/support/kb/index.php?action=artikel&cat=11&id=1114&artlang=en[/link]

I think the printer session was in November.

Plus Cblake has a good article floating around here some where.

This KKE was on installing printers not really monitoring them. I watched that last night hoping for a better solution. I just need a way to monitor printer errors and when supplies need to be ordered from them hopefully in one location. Since most of our printers are dell printers I was hoping kace will get this feature at some point with SNMP. Thats why I questioned the Dell Openmanage Print Manager. I guess I will load it up and if I get it working I'll write an post about it here. :) Thanks for the link though.

I understand what you both are saying and that's sorta what I meant. I just think I wasn't very clear. Dells makes a program that is external from Kace called Dell OpenManage printer Manager. http://content.dell.com/us/en/enterprise/d/flexible-computing/client-systems-management-ompm.aspx This program is similar to HP Web Jet Admin (which I have looked into as a solution also) I was just wondering if anyone has setup a email rule for one of these programs to create reports or input tickets for errors that these applications could email notify a help desk about. I will look into both of the above products and write back if I come up with a decent solution. Thanks for your replies they were very helpful.

Dell OpenManage Essentials - http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/openmanage-essentials.aspx - will monitor SNMP traps from Dell Printers.

Using these instructions - http://itninja.com/question/pdf-printers79 - you can setup the email alerts from Essentials to produce a service queue for printers within KACE.

Let me know if this helps you out.
