Many Default Profile issues

For some odd reason I have many (like 100's) of computers that somehow the default profile became corrupt and when users log in they get a Windows Basic theme an cannot access many items that should be in the start menu or on the task bar in Windows 7 like Internet Explorer.   I can fix this by logging in as an admin and renaming the default profile folder to default2 or something and copying the default profile off a working computer over.  I would like to avoid this and avoid having to image all those computers.  I suspect that a recent windows update or some software I pushed through KACE or something caused this but it only affected some of my systems.

Have you tried to rollback a system using recovery prior to the last changes?

  • Yes but it seems to be happening randomly and we have no settings in Group Policy that should cause this. The only thing I can think of is a recent Windows update or something but it doesn't explain why some machines in a lab imaged with the same image are fine and others are not and why a user can log into one machine and get a Windows basic profile and no links to internet explorer and then log into another one and be fine. - bwilkerson 11 years ago
  • We had problems with SAV 11 causing random corruption and temp profiles upon startup because of a bug in it, went to 12 and it stopped. You should look at what other 3rd party software is starting it usuallly is a timing problem with loading the the profile and hive, if some software holds up the process you will get a basic profile loaded from the system area instead of the users area - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
  • Your first couple of sentence's point to a system profile. It is at C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile and is very basic and no theme. When this happens look in the users folder and see if you have a temp profile and your normal also. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

  • Are those machines are from same location or they are in different locations? - jagadeish 11 years ago

I would first find out what caused it before doing anything. No point in doing all the work getting it right again just to have it happen again.

  • I wish I could put a finger on why this is happening as it happens to my login sometimes but not others. It is very odd. - bwilkerson 11 years ago

You could always setup a folder synchronisation and correct the default profile that way on those machines.

However re-sysprepping and capturing the image again would probably be a long term go-er.
