Patching for Office 2019 ProPlus?

We're currently looking at adopting Microsoft Office 2019 and have highlighted some challenges with the new Click To Run updater mechanism.

It looks like Office 2019 Perpetual is now in the KACE patch library and can be selected so I'm hoping to get some more information for configuration requirements for Office 2019 itself.

It looks like while KACE cannot deliver the patch files themselves for 2019/3`65, it can instruct the product to download content via the CDN or a network share (if configured).

Will this process work even if auto-update is disabled via the Office 2019 deployment configuration? A very large percentage of our environment is running DeepFreeze and we'd want to avoid systems auto-updating outside of their patching windows or business hours.

How updates are different in Office 2019:

-There are no separate downloads for security or quality updates. Updates are already included as part of a new build of Office 2019 that’s posted on the Office CDN.

-you don’t use Microsoft Updates or Windows Server Updates Services (WSUS) to update Office 2019.

If there are no separate downloads (KB updates), everything is being pulled of their CDN... and even their WSUS is not going to work.... I doubt KACE could be able to push the updates themselves.

Like you said, they're probably pushing the command to trigger the update... but the source is out there.

Let's see what others say.

  • I'm pretty sure that's what is being done, what I'm uncertain of is whether it will work with auto-update turned off. I wonder if running the office setup.exe on top of an existing install updates it? - Kiyolaka 4 years ago
    • I checked the details of one of those patches, and it says this:

"During deployment the Patch-Smart installer triggers OfficeC2RClient.exe to perform the update; Patch-Smart will timeout and fail deployment after 15 minutes.

If deployment fails, please wait at least an hour for OfficeC2RClient.exe to complete the update process before retrying the deployment"

Are you using an Office 365 suite? or Is this the classic Stand Alone VL Office 2019? - Channeler 4 years ago
      • Thanks! This more or less answers my question, I'm guesing it runs it with the /update command, targeting a specific release. I'm now testing to see if the /update command still works with auto-update shut off. https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/odsupport/2014/03/03/the-new-update-now-feature-for-office-2013-click-to-run-for-office365-and-its-associated-command-line-and-switches/ - Kiyolaka 4 years ago
