Scripted Install only works when run from Local Machine

Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new to KACE so please forgive any stupid questions. I have been currently tasked with building a software package to deploy the Windows Screen Recorder software so our end users can download it when they need. We are currently in a School environment so staff and facilty have limited system rights and we are running Win 7 x64 machines and our agent version is 5.5.

I have created a simple installed package, a bat file really that calls the msi and exes to install the software. I have zipped all the installers and the bat file together. I have created a script that downloads the zip file and extracts it to the C ROOT. I then call the Bat file in the folder to install the software with the appropriate switches.

Here is the link to Technet with the software in question:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.03.utilityspotlight2.aspx

The package is the Windows encoder and screen reader installers. The encoder will install properly however the screen recorder will not. When I push it as a script or download it as a script it shows that it completed successfully but the program does create the short cut or show up in the all programs list. Now if I go to the C ROOT where the files are located and run the same bat file that I call with KACE it install properly. I have run the script as Local System and with the System Admin credentials.

To be honest I am at a lost any help in the matter would greatly be appreciated.

You know Windows 7 has a perfectly serviceable equivalent - the Problem Steps Recorder - built in, right?

Start/Run/PSR[ enter]

If you want to persist with the ancient Screen Recorder, you'll probably find that the EXE exracts and executes an MSI and that that MSI contains one or more Custom Actions which only run when in UI mode, i.e. they won't run when the install is run silently.

Run the installer again locally but, as soon as you see the 'Welcome' screen, search your machine for a new MSI. %TEMP% is the most likely location.

  • VBScab, Thank you for your response. However PSR is not what we are needing. My Director is looking to replace CamStudio that are teachers currently use for teaching. I have suggested Microsoft Expressions screen recording software.

I already have extracted the MSI out of the EXE. It only contains the Encoder EXE and the MSI of the screen recorder. The encoder installs perfectly. Thank you again for your suggestion. - fharris1977 8 years ago

I would recommend reviewing the admin manual for creating managed installations. Scripts may seem like a good way to deploy software but KACE really excels at using managed installs for that purpose.

>the MSI of the screen recorder.
So now examine that MSI and compafre the CAs in the UI sequence versus those in the Execute sequence. I'll wager that there's at least one which is in UI but should also be in Execute.

Do two installs separately on your VM: one taken with a non-silent and one with a silent one. The missing CA should then be obvious.
