K2000 Install Quick Start:

Step 1: Plan for your K2000 installation

• Identify a static IP address for the K2000 and set DNS on your network to resolve the hostname, “K2000”, to the static K2000 IP address.
• Requirement: Your K2000 will need Internet Access in order to register the trial license key.

Step 2: Configure your DHCP Server to enable PXE boot to work over the network (perform on your Microsoft DHCP Server)

• If needed, engage your networking group to setup your DHCP server and DNS server. DHCP and DNS are critical foundation items we need to have configured correctly and is the core foundation of the K2000 working properly.

[blockquote]Configure DHCP Server[/blockquote][blockquote]

• To perform deployment tasks, the K2000 requires that clients boot from the appliance over the network. When a client is booting from the network, the PXE BIOS on the client uses DHCP to locate the boot server.
• In this exercise, you will configure your DHCP server to direct network booting clients to boot from the K2000.

[/blockquote]Exercise:

1. Open the configuration application for your DHCP server.
2. For each subnet or scope that you want clients to be able to boot from the K2000 on:
   • Set Option 66 to the IP Address of the K2000 or the RSA. This option may also be referred to as Boot Server Host Name or TFTP server name. This will be difference for each of your subnets as you will use the IP address of the K2000 Remote Site Appliance (RSA) for those remote locations that is local that site.
     
     On certain models of Cisco networking equipment, you may be unable to set option 66. As an alternate configuration, you may set both the sname and option 244 settings to the IP address of the K2000.
     
   • Set Option 67 to the string k2000.0. This option may also be referred to as BootFile Name. This will always be the same.
     
     
3. Your network is now configured to boot clients from the K2000.

Step 3: Configure IP Address (from K2000 console – only for first time setup; only once)
The first-time setup requires monitor and keyboard access to the K2000 terminal. During the initial boot ONLY, the appliance will require 5-10 minutes to initialize and startup. At the login prompt type:

Login: konfig
Password: konfig

From there you are ready to configure the K2000 network settings. Use the UP and DOWN arrows to move between fields and edit the settings for your network. When you've made the necessary changes, move to "Apply" and use the RIGHT arrow key to save the changes. The K2000 will then reboot with the new settings.

Step 4: Initial configuration and enter in the trial license key (from web browser)
If not already, register for the Dell KACE appliance trial here:
www.kace.com/trial
After registering, you will obtain a trial license key via email automatically. Refer to the email sent from KACE for your trial license key and enter it below.

Instructions to enter the license key:
Requirement: Your K2000 will need Internet Access in order to register the trial license key. STOP here until you’ve confirmed the K2000 has Internet Access.

1. Direct your web browser to the K2000 at http://K2000 or http://[K2000_IP_Address]. This will bring you to the initial configuration page to enter in the trial license key and other settings.
2. Enter in your license key provided in the email after registering.

Your K2000 Appliance is now ready to use.

Additional helpful steps:

• Use a Windows 7 64 bit OS computer ready to go which is primarily used to create the KACE Boot Environments (KBE). Designate this system as your main K2000 computer console since the KACE Media Manager will need to be installed to upload OS source media for scripted installs and also the Windows Automated Installation Kit.
• Download and Install Windows AIK (Large 1 GB download)
  The K2000 makes use of several tools that Microsoft has bundled into the Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 (WAIK). To perform several of the exercises below, you will need to first download and install the WAIK onto your computer.

1. Download the Windows AIK from the Microsoft website.

2. Burn the downloaded ISO file (KB3AIK_EN.iso) to a DVD, or use an ISO mounting utility to access the files.
3. Run the WAIK installer (StartCD.exe).
   
   
• Use the K2000 Guided Tour for guidance on getting your K2000 console designated computer setup.
  • From the K2000 login to the web console: Click on the secondary tab called “Guided Tour” from the Home Page > Then Click on “Setup” and follow the instructions there. Feel free to try building KBE before the call, it will save a lot of time.
• Download and install 7-Zip (free) on this K2000 designated computer console in support of managing drivers.
• Drivers – pick two computer models you want to use/test and manually download the network drivers from their web site and have them ready in support for building KBE to support the KBE booting process.
• Your Windows 7 official Microsoft install media (not Dell OEM re-install media) – to upload via Media Manager in support of Scripted Installs.
• Your Windows 7 Volume License Product Key – need to enter for Scripted Installs. Note: Use of a Microsoft Key Server is preferred for activating Windows 7.
