Unable to boot Surface Pro 3

I acquired an image from a Surface Pro 3 that needs to be returned back to Microsoft for repair. The image was acquired using a Kace K2000, in which I used the kace image format. Once completed, I then pushed this same image to the new Surface Pro 3. I've done this many of times with laptops, even ones with SSD's but these were all Windows 7 versus Windows 8.1 that uses UEFI. Once the image is successfully deployed and restarted it goes directly to the BIOS menu. HELP!

  • send it as is they will just put their image back on it. Other wise you need to create a uefi 8.1 boot env and use a usb stick to boot to it. - SMal.tmcc 8 years ago
  • Thanks, that would be an option if the tablet i'm attempting to apply the image to was being sent back in. I believe my issue stems from maybe not creating UEFI partitions correctly. - CharsWigg 8 years ago

Hello,

Windows 8.1 usually has a UEFI partition for its boot information, when capturing it with the K2000 appliance it is usually necessary to access the Recovery>Command Prompt and enter diskpart. Once in Diskpart utility assign a letter to the UEFI boot partition (recommend S: as there are some pre-configured tasks which make the assumption S is the UEFI FAT32 boot drive).

Would also look at https://support.software.dell.com/k2000-systems-deployment-appliance/kb/113970, while the title shows Windows 7 information there is a section about UEFI. Once the image is captured be sure to use the Create UEFI and Apply UEFI tasks as the pre-installation/mid-level tasks. This way the image captured will match the partitioning that was captured.
