Visio 2013 and Project 2013 App-V integration with Outlook 2013 which is locally installed

Hi Everyone

Outlook 2013 is installed locally on the machine, Visio 2013 and Project 2013 have been virtualized in App-V.

After the App-V apps have been installed I can open them and created files, save files and do all normal things.

The problem is the integration with Outlook 2013 (which is installed locally).

When a Visio or Project attachment is sent to the user and the user attempts to double click on the attachment and open it nothing happens. When they save the attachment to the local machine it will open without an issue. Also if the user is sent a word or excel document they can open them without any issues by double clicking the attachment the same as I do with Visio or Project that does not work.

I have checked the default programs for windows and it is set correctly, for instance .vsd and .vsdx files are set to be opened by Visio. And so it should if the files open with the correct application when it is saved to the machine.

It just looks like Outlook does not recognize these virtualized apps when double clicking on the attachments.

Has anyone come across this before? And does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue?

My next step is to install the programs locally to test and see if there is still an issue, but going forward I need these apps to be virtualized.

EDIT - I just installed Visio locally and Outlook can now open attachments without an issue by double clicking. So it seems to something to do with the App-V installation.

Regards

Jase

  • Hi Badger
Thanks for your reply. Have you come across this isuse before?
We are using version 5 Sp2.
It is very strange. We may need use a local install rather than App-V is this doesn't work.
    Thank

  • Isn't there a setting to allow App/V bubbles to communicate with other bubbles and the base operating system? This was introduced somewhere at V5 if I recall correctly, probably to compete with Symantec Workspace Virtualisation Solution which has always had full intercommunication between all virtual apps and the base. - EdT 9 years ago

App-v 5 Sp2 is much better for this...

natively it is isolated, so you will have this problem.

Hang on, your files types should open OK, as its just opening a file. if you double click a visio file on its own does it open in the App-V app??

Have you got the separate physical install for the Office 2010 virtualisation?? (its about getting the licensing to work)

You can use the RunVirtual thingy...

Check out this link...

App-v v5 RunVirtual

So, you would add the runvirtual Key for Outlook.exe. When it is launched, it will pull in the Virtual App you have told it about. and if the Gods are on your side, the functionality of Visio and or Project will be available inside your outlook attachments.

If you are publishing Visio/Project to users, try global publishing instead. Microsoft recommend global publishing for Office 2013 packages, I'm not sure what breaks exactly when you publish to users, but it's worth a shot.
