Although native to the Windows 2000/ME and later operating systems, it can be used today on Windows 95, 98, and NT systems by installing the Windows Installer service for the respective operating system.
The ability to advertise an MSI is platform dependent. Windows 95 and NT4 with shell32.DLL < 4.72.3110.0 do not support advertising at all. Other platforms have limited support, only Windows 2000 and XP offer full advertising support.
