Why can't I deploy Windows Media Player 11 with SCCM?

Target systems are Windows XP 64-bit.

Built a package using Wise Package Studio 8. Referencing this page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd758057(v=vs.85).aspx), I'm using this command line:

wmp11-windowsxp-x64-enu.exe /q:A /c:"setup_wm.exe /Q /R:N"

If I install manually, it's always successful, but if I deploy with SCCM, the install always fails, even though SCCM reports as successful. I'm deploying whether or not a user is logged in. I ran Process Monitor during the last SCCM install and didn't find anything that indicated the source of the failure.

Anyone run into this before?

Check the eventviewer and see that it is actually running the package so you should see windows installer messages about the Media Player 11 install... possibly see errors there or if there is nothing maybe your package is not actually running the install your batch file or command used may return success because it ran but never actually ran the application the way you expected.

  • Thanks, GAKIS. Compared Event Viewer between running a manual install and an SCCM install and the same processes get fired off in the same order in both instances, so no new revelations as to what's wrong w/ the SCCM deploy. - RonW 11 years ago
  • So the even viewer reports it installed correctly but the application is not updated to 11? - GAKIS 11 years ago
  • That is true. - RonW 11 years ago

It should be an MSI, so try extracting it and then deploy it.

I'm thinking your installer is probably just firing off that 2nd exe and then returning, not actually checking the result of that 2nd installer. For starters, extract that setup_wm.exe and all it needs and run the command from that. If, while extracting, you run into an MSI, like pyush said, start from that

Comments:
  • Tried installing via SCCM from the second exe, as well, but it fails with message "This operation requires an interactive window station". The exe itself doesn't offer any parameters for extracting files. I tried using Universal Uninstall, which did the trick, but no MSI revealed itself either there or during the installation itself. The packaging notes on IT Ninja say to use the Enterprise Deployment Pack for WMP 10, but I've had zero luck finding it anywhere on the web, including MSDN. There are numerous mentions of it and several links, but the links don't really go to a download site for the deployment pack. - RonW 11 years ago

What do you mean by "Built a package using Wise Package Studio 8"?

You are still using the installer provided by Microsoft according to your install command.

I agree with the above comments. Run the installer with /? to find if there's any way you can extract the MSI. For MS products it's usually:

Bla.exe /extract:c:\temp\
