WIFI slower than LAN, only when comunicating with file server
Yes I know WiFi is naturally slower than LAN, but that is not my problem. When I run bandwidth tests (speedtest.net), switching between wifi and lan produces identical results. However if i try to pull a file off our file server, the diference between wifi and lan is huge. Wifi is 3 to 4 times slower than lan.
I have searched everywhere and have been unable to find an answer. Has this ever happened to anyone else? What are some things I could test to figure this out?

If you are using 802.11n the max theoretical speed is 300Mbps. Your actual speed is probably less. On lan you probably have a Gigabit connection. Now speedtest.net would test your internet connection speed. So for instance a 15mbps internet connection would show the same results for both wifi and lan because the internet is your slowest pipe.
Now if your server is on your local network and not out on the internet, then wifi should run slower since wifi is a 300Mbps versus a Gigabit lan connection.

Could be a MTU setting problem, especially if it occurs transferring files larger then 1500 bytes but not on smaller ones.

Try transferring 20 1k files and compare to one 20k file should only be slightly longer for the large file due to having to fragment the file to transfer it - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago

I have had tweek my mtu size at home due to the crappy modem I got from ATT for my DSL. Mtu size was default 1500 and I had to change mine to 1467 and all was fine with large files again. Most like it nothing really just what darkhawktman posted. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
