Here is some info on the many ways iTunes saves its settings:

iTunes has two preference files that can be copied into the installation to prevent the EULA and initial startup options (so instead iTunes launches directly the first time).

%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref

Each file seems to contain different settings. The file under LocalAppData has the EULA and the “Check for iTunes updates automatically” settings.

iTunes and Quicktime are both seperate msi installations, and can be deployed via GP.

1. Do a 'normal installation' to completion. You will find the installation under %windir%\downloaded installations\{1E8CF57A-24E8-4A97-9564-A8F1956C447B}.
- This contains the iTunes.msi file

2. *Copy this folder and it's contents somewhere safe*

3. From the folder in (1), run the 'Quicktimeinstaller.exe' file, and wait until the prompt to remove quicktime

4. Go into temp folder, and find the folder (starting with an '_') that will have the quicktime msi files in it and put them somewhere safe.

5. Using orca or preferred tool, add the value ISSETUPISDRIVEN with a value of '1' in the property table (or create a transform) for both msi files.

6. You can now add these as assigned applications via group policy

Note
This is if you want to install iTunes but not Quicktime (i prefer Quicktime alternative).

Download itune latest version and extract using winrar. in the extracted files you will find isscriptXX.msi and itunes.msi. Run the isscriptXX.msi first.

Then run the itunes.msi with the following command line:

msiexec /i C:\Users\doug\Desktop\iTunesSetup\iTunes.msi TRANSFORMS=C:\Users\doug\Desktop\iTunesSetup\1033.mst INSTALLLEVEL=1000 ISSETUPDRIVEN=1 ALLUSERS=2

I could do everything I need to do with I tunes and didn't have to deal at all with Quicktime no taking over my system.

Note
I have successfully packaged iTunes.

I found this msi very annoying to do, so I thought I'd share my knowledge to make your life a little eaiser.

The biggest problem I had was with the ipod service. If the user does not have administrator rights then the service doesn't start. I got around this by doing the following:

1. create a custom action that runs the iPodService.exe file (found in the c:\program files\ipod\bin folder) with a /service
2. I placed this custom action last in the InstallExecute sequence.

good luck.

Command Line
iTunesSetup.exe /s /v"ISSETUPDRIVEN=0 SILENT_INSTALL=1 INSTALL_DESKTOP_SHORTCUTS=0 ASSUME_QT_DEFAULTS=0 ASSUME_MEDIA_DEFAULTS=0 ALLUSERS=1 /qb!"

ISSETUPDRIVEN avoids the MSI asking to be run from setup.exe.
Set ASSUME_xxx_DEFAULTS to 1 if you want iTunes (MEDIA) or Quicktime (QT) to be the Standard Player.
The rest is self explaining.

Note

For iTunes 6.0.4.2 (downloaded/installed as of 06-JUN-2006), the GUID used in the path to the installation cache is different than the one mentiond in an earlier post. For me, I found the unpacked iTunes MSI under "%windir%\Downloaded Installations\{59C4F14F-7590-45FC-BE9F-A67AB3590709}". If you find multiple versions of iTunes in the "Downloaded Installations" directory, you can identify the version of each set of cached installation files by examining "setup.ini" or the MSI file itself.

Note
It appears that iTunes now uses .xml files for the preferences, instead of .pref. Hence, the two files that iTunes sets up for each user, to control the EULA and first-run experience would be:

%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml
