Note
Use the Profile Wizard to gain control over which settings are deployed with Microsoft Office 2000. Use this to create and distribute a default user profile with Office 2000 to have all users start with the same default settings.

- Install Office 2000 on a test computer
- Customize the toolbars, option settings, templates, etc.
- Run the Profile Wizard to create an OPS file
- When running the Office Custom Installation Wizard, incude the OPS file. The OPS file settings will then be included in the Windows installer transform (MST file), so the customized settings are installed automatically when Office 2000 is initially deployed as you specify them to be.

Note
When you attempt to add a Microsoft Office .msi file to a new Group Policy Object (GPO) in Microsoft Windows 2000, the following or similar error message may appear:

"Add operation failed. Unable to extract deployment information from the package. Run validation on the package to ensure the package is correct. The GPO cannot be created."

This error can occur if Office 2000 is installed on the computer where you are creating the GPO. This problem can also occur if the version of Office 2000 that is installed on the computer that is being used to create the GPO is not the same version as the computer the GPO is being created for.

Note
Below are some notes and tips from problems encountered using a repackaging tool to create a single executable installation of Office 2000 and IE 5.01 (which, by the way, is not recommened):

- To avoid an error of 1925 being produced by the Windows Installer, the AlwaysInstallElevated key must be forced to a value of 1 in both the User and Machine areas of the registry. This is best implemented through a system policy (an ADM template file is provided). The downside to this setting is that if you are trying to stop users from having the ability to install applications on their workstations through file permission settings, you have just created a hole. A user will have the ability to install applications that support the Windows Installer due to the fact that the Windows Installer will perform the installation for the user, and this service will have the proper permissions to do so. Limiting Windows Installer to performing installations of only "Advertised" applications requires that you deploy Office 2000 this way. The downside of this method of installation is that only the icons for the suite are deployed and the entire application installs on demand (not normally something you will want to do to your network or your users.)
- Give users a shortcut to Newsgroups by implementing the steps in Q195798.
- NetMeeting may not be removed from the Custom Installation Wizard (the same goes for Outlook Express even though it appears to be an option in the CIW). These items are installed regardless of how the CIW is instructed.
- Outlook Express is required by Outlook 2000 for simple MAPI functionality (i.e. the "Mail To Recipient" option in the Office 2000 applications) and for use as a Newsgroup reader.
- Need to suppress the Internet Connection Wizard? There is a system policy template available in the Resource Kit.
- The error detailed in Q222343 was experienced one time, "Another Version of Outlook was installed...did you use that version of Outlook to read electronic mail?" Microsoft was contacted and there was no fix available for the issue at the time we spoke.
- The Notes From The Field book on Office 2000 deployment (chapter 11) advises that removing certain help files will solve the problem of effectively removing links to the internet as may be required by some intranets. The files were ACWEB9.CHM, ACWEB9.CHM, OLWEB9.CHM, PPWEB.CHM, WEWEB9.CHM, and XLWEB9.CHM. However removing these files from the administrative load point causes errors when users engage in an action which causes the Windows Installer to provide them. Another method of removing the links was to edit out the links and recompile the help files manually. Due to the relatively low number of links to the web, it was decided to simply leave it alone, but if you want them out- you'll have to do it by editing the files, not deleting them.

Security

When the Windows Installer service is updated, specifically with the Office 2002 installation, you could experience slow installs and eventually installation errors if the proper rights to the \WINNT\Installer folder have been altered. This problem only affects computers running Windows NT, 2000, or XP, due to the NTFS file system. These computers with FAT32 will not experience the problem since FAT32 does not use the level of security built into NTFS. To resolve this problem, change the permissions on the Installer folder to: Everyone - Read (RX) Administrators - FullControl SYSTEM - FullControl
