Active Directory Group Policy Software Installation Reboot question

Just a quick question.

I have multiple Group Policies assigned to a single Organizational Unit. Each policy deploys a MSI software installation. One of these requires a reboot. Will Active Dirtectory be smart enough to prevent another installation from starting until after the reboot takes place, or will the machine reboot during the next installation.

I can re-order the policies if needed, but that does not prevent another administrator from just adding another policy to this OU after the policy that requires a reboot.

It's been my experience that when a GPO is applied that requires a reboot, it will reboot right when that policy is ran. The rest of the GPO's that have not been applied yet will then be applied after the reboot.

If the installs are all seperate GPOs, then I assume it will process the GPO that requires reboot, then reboot when it is done, but I just need confirmation on my assumptions.

Yes, it will reboot once that GPO is finished applying. It will NOT go to the next GPO until it reboots. This assumes that the installs are seperate GPO's. (IMO, this is the best approach, gives greater control over the order of installation. Remember, in 2000 the policies apply from bottom up) In our environment, we have Win2k SP3 as the first GPO. It requires a reboot, and does so before any other GPO's are processed.

I hope this helps you out, AD can be tricky.

Thanks,

Tom

I have also found that if you want apps to install in alphabetic order then add them to the GPO in that order and they will actually come down that order.
Rating comments in this legacy AppDeploy message board thread won't reorder them,
so that the conversation will remain readable.
