Adobe Flash in Chrome and IE

Hi all,
I am trying to package Adobe Flash player version 17 for both IE and Chrome. I am not having any issues with the package as such as it is pretty straight forward it seems. My question is around how both Microsoft and Google are now incorporating Adobe Flash player into their browsers. For instance I have just packaged Google Chrome for enterprise and installed it to discover that the version of flash i was attempting to package was already included with Google Chrome. I will be disabling Google Chome's auto update feature using Group Policy so I am wondering will this embedded version of Flash try to auto update itself? Is there a way of installing Chrome without Flash installed? Likewise, the same seems to be the case for internet explorer on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. Where Adobe flash player is installed with the browser and not separately. What is the best way of dealing with Flash these days? Do we still disable autoupdate using the mms.cfg file? Has anybody got any experience of this?

Any advice or observations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

We have Adobe Flash Player (ActiveX and Plugin) and we also have Google Chrome. We don't worry about any issues to be honest, we disable any autoupdate on both. I don't think Google Chrome will update it's Flash Player until Google Chrome itself is updated.

So if users are using Google Chrome and it says Flash is out of date, you're going to have to do a new version of Google Chrome.

Thanks Jay,

As Adobe Flash is also bundled with Microsoft IE now, how do you handle it if Microsoft were to release an update to IE?
I guess once Adobe Flash autoupdate is disabled we've got nothing to worry about?

So, am I right in saying that once the file mms.cfg is created in System32\Macromed\Flash and contains the following information,
AutoUpdateDisable=1

Autoupdate will be disabled for all flavours of Adobe Flash?

Rgds,
Mark

  • Hi Mark sorry for late reply. Flash player isn't bundled in with IE as far as I know. That is correct about the mms.cfg however you want to have this inside:

    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0
    AutoUpdateDisable=1

    So both of those and not just the one. Yes all versions of flash use that, even the Flash plugin which is for firefox etc. - jaycominos 8 years ago
