Turning off windows autoupdates but still allow users off campus to do their own updates

We are using a GPO to grey out windows updates so that users can't turn them off. We want to handle the updates with KBOX but also have the ability for users that travel with a laptop be able to do updates from the Microsoft site. When our networking department used a GPO to turn off the autoupdate feature using a GPO for Windows 7 it now keeps anyone from doing updates on their own. XP and Windows7

Has anyone else ran into this and if so how did you fix the problem?

thanks
